San Francisco with New Stadium Wants Super Bowl L in 2016

Groundbreaking for the new 49ers stadium will begin on Thursday and according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, the team hopes that in four years the $1.02 billion facility will be the site of Super Bowl L (otherwise known as Super Bowl 50).

A team source said Friday that the 49ers plan to bid for that Super Bowl. If that is awarded to another city, they also will shoot for the following year’s game.

The next three Super Bowls will be played in New Orleans, New Jersey and Glendale, Ariz. respectively. The next one to be awarded, Super Bowl L, will be played in February 2016. Teams are required to play two full seasons in their new venues before hosting a Super Bowl. The 49ers are increasingly confident that the yet-to-be-named stadium in Santa Clara will be ready for the start of the 2014 season.

According to the NFL, the process will begin this summer when interested cities apply to the Super Bowl Advisory Committee for an invitation to bid. The committee then decides on finalists at the owners meeting in October. A vote is expected to take place in May.

There is good reason to believe Santa Clara will get the bid. The NFL likes to place Super Bowls in new venues and the 49ers will have the shiniest and newest digs when Super Bowl L rolls around.

Jacobs Excited to Be Joining the NIners

Brandon Jacobs is hoping to add some punch to the Niners run game, and as the team announced the deal Friday, Jacobs threw a number of compliments at the team.

“The 49ers are a great organization,” Jacobs said on Friday. “I’ve played against the 49ers year in, year out, and it’s always a great challenge. It’s a great football team, great ownership and a team that’s on its way up to a championship.

“It’s a good football team and really close. And I felt wanted. I felt they really wanted me around and I was excited about it.”

Jacobs is fourth in Giants’ history with 4,849 rushing yards and is the team’s all-time leader in rushing touchdowns with 56. Jacobs twice topped 1,000 yards rushing (2007, 2008) his 15 rushing touchdowns in 2008 was the second-highest single-season total in team history.

Jacobs added 461 yards and four rushing touchdowns in 10 post-season games, including 23 carries for 79 yards in two Super Bowl wins over the Patriots.

Released by the Giants after failing to agree to a restructured contract, Jacobs agreed to terms with the 49ers on March 28. Jacobs acknowledged on Friday that he grew up rooting for the team.

“When I chose them as my team, I barely knew anything about football,” Jacobs said. “I was only 8 years old and only liked their uniforms. That’s what drew me to the 49ers. And I stuck with them. I even found myself cheering for them on like Sunday nights when we weren’t playing against them, seven years deep into the NFL. I was a really big fan.”

Niners New Stadium Groundbreaking Will Start on April 19th

The groundbreaking on the Niners new stadium will start on April 19th.

The San Francisco 49ers have made it official: the team will conduct a Santa Clara groundbreaking ceremony for their new stadium on Thursday, April 19. After some lockout-related financial delays, the financing plan came together fast enough to get the stadium started sooner rather than later. Construction work had already begun on make-ready work at and around the site, but April 19 will mark the official shovel in the ground for the stadium. There were some modest legal delays related to the financing plan, but the court threw dismissed the case, putting the stadium back on track. In getting the stadium started this month, the 49ers should be in sufficient position to start playing their in 2014.

Niners Ink Former Giants RB Brandon Jacobs

The 49ers have taken their second NY Giant this offseason, as today the team came to terms with free agent running back Brandon Jacobs. Those terms were not disclosed.

A fourth-round pick out of Southern Illinois by the New York Giants in 2005, the 6-foot-4, 256-pound Jacobs ranks fourth in Giants’ history with 4,849 rushing yards and is the team’s all-time leader in rushing touchdowns with 56.

Jacobs twice topped 1,000 yards rushing (2007, 2008) his 15 rushing touchdowns in 2008 was the second-highest single-season total in team history. Jacobs added 461 yards and four rushing touchdowns in 10 post-season games, including 23 carries for 79 yards in two Super Bowl wins over the New England Patriots.

Released by the Giants for salary cap purposes earlier this month, the club had not ruled out bringing him back at a lower rate.

In San Francisco, Jacobs will be a big-bodied, veteran complement to starter Frank Gore and 5-foot-9, 199-pound backup running back Kendall Hunter.

Niners Ink Former Bucs QB Josh Johnson

The 49ers have a new QB on the roster, as the team inked Josh Johnson to a two-year contract. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Johnson, 25, was a 2008 fifth-round pick out of San Diego by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Johnson appeared in 26 games, including five starts, and has passed for 1,042 yards with five touchdowns and 10 interceptions with 254 rushing yards on 37 attempts.

Johnson played for 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh at San Diego, where was a three-year starter. Johnson passed for 9,699 yards and 113 touchdowns for the Toreros, while running for 1,864 yards and an additional 19 touchdowns. USD went 30-4 in Johnson’s starts.

The 49ers re-signed quarterback Alex Smith to a three-year, $24 million contract that includes $9 million in fully guaranteed money at the time of signing, with an additional $7.5 million guaranteed if he’s on the roster next April. Johnson, who drew interest from the Washington Redskins, is expected to push 2011 second round pick Colin Kaepernick for the No. 2 job.

Smith Back with the Niners with a Three-Year Deal

Alex Smith is officially back with the Niners, as he and the team have come to terms on a three-year deal.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but the 49ers were reportedly offering Smith a three-year, $24 million contract prior to the start of the 2012 league year.

The team went hard after Peyton Manning, but turned their sights back to Smith after Manning announced that he was joining the Denver Broncos early Monday.

Smith is coming off his best year as a pro by far, throwing for 3,144 yards with 17 touchdowns and just five interceptions as he got the Niners to OT of the NFC Title game.

The former first-round pick completed 58 percent of his pass attempts for 12,543 yards with 68 touchdowns and 58 interceptions over his 70-game career with the 49ers.

After last year’s lockout, Smith signed a one-year, $4 million contract that also included up to $3 million in various incentives.

Smith drew interest from both the Dolphins, who signed David Garrard, and Seahawks, who signed Matt Flynn to a three-year contract.

Smith and the Niners Trying to Iron Out Their Issues

The Niners lost out on the Peyton Manning sweepstakes on Monday, and now the team is trying to get back QB Alex Smith.

Matt Maiocco of Comcast SportsNet Bay Area states that the Niners and Smith are trying to work things out, and come to terms on a deal that will get him back in the Bay.

The report says specifically that Smith and head coach Jim Harbaugh are “ironing things out.”

Smith started every single game for the 49ers team that went 13-3 last year and was close to taking San Fran to the Super Bowl, but a couple turnovers on special teams killed their chances in an OT loss to the Giants.

Despite the run at Manning, there’s no question that Smith and the Niners need to work things out, this despite Smith chatting over the weekend with the Dolphins for five hours.
