Last season the San Francisco 49ers at one point seemed headed for the first overall pick in the NFL Draft, but after the team make a wild mid-season deal for Patriots backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, things went about as well as could be expected for the team as they won their last five games with Garoppolo leading the way.
After wrapping up the year at 6-10, this season the Niners, are hoping for bigger and better, and based on their schedule the team could be in an interesting position to challenge for possibly the division or a wild card spot in the NFC.
If you look at American Football Betting and where the 49’ers are expected to be in 2018, the team by most opinions are expected to win anywhere between 6-9 games, the latter putting them right in the mix for a wild card spot in the NFC.
Bill Barnwell pegged the 49ers at 7.5 wins for the 2018 season, and with the offseason moves as well as the NFL Draft and new players the team has added, that should be just about right.
Of course the bounce of the ball one way or another, or a kicker having a good or bad day can alter that win total by one or two, as usually in the NFL it comes down to just a couple of plays made by specific players, and hopefully this season the Niners will have the players in place to make those plays.
The team last season played so well down the stretch you can see why there is a lot of positive thoughts about the team, but the addition of Garoppolo is probably the biggest reason people think the Niners are going to be ultra-competitive in 2018.
The Niners in their last three games of the regular season scored a total of 102 points, including 78 points in their last two games with impressive wins over the Jacksonville Jaguars, the AFC South Champs who ended up making the AFC Title Game, and the team that won the NFC West, the Los Angeles Rams.
There’s going to be plenty of bumps in the road along the way, and the coaching staff is going to have their work cut out for them, but the Niners should very much be in the mix to be a team that is going to be fun to watch in 2018, and if things go right, getting to 8-9 wins might not be that far off when it’s all over.
