It was that kind of feeling around the 49ers last night after their 41-6 dismantling of the San Diego Chargers. Did the game matter even in the slightest? No. The fourth preseason game is basically an exhibition of back ups and roster hopefuls as many of the starters barely played or sat out the game entirely. Even so, the 49ers have to be thrilled with some of the things they saw.
Second year outside linebacker Cam Johnson had the game of his life with two sacks and a blocked punt that he recovered in the end zone for a touchdown. With Aldon Smith, Ahmad Brooks, Corey Lemonier, and Dan Skuta all locks to make the final roster, is there any way Johnson could have played his way into a 5th linebacker spot?
“After tonight, the way Cam Johnson played, heck yeah we can,” Harbaugh said with enthusiasm. “We’re the San Francisco 49ers. We can do whatever we want!”
Excitement continues to build around quarterback B.J. Daniels as he turned in another outstanding performance throwing for two touchdowns and rushing for another 54 yards. Newly acquired Seneca Wallace informed the team before the game that he was retiring which all but assures Daniels makes the squad as the third quarterback. Regardless of the Wallace situation, Daniels had earned his spot on the roster and looks to be a 7th round steal for San Francisco.
Speaking of steals, rookie wide receiver Quinton Patton might be another one. The 49ers fourth round selection caught a bubble screen from Colin Kaepernick and raced 43 yards for a touchdown. The fact that he has seen time with the starters in both preseason games speaks volumes about what the 49ers think of Patton. In the two games since returning from his injury, Patton has 6 catches for 87 yards and two touchdowns. He’ll be a player to keep an eye on in week one as he could see a lot of action against the Green Bay Packers.
