Add another name to the competition at wide receiver.
Rookie Quinton Patton has been cleared to fully participate in practice as he is recovered from a broken finger he suffered catching a pass from none other than…Colt McCoy.
“Everybody thinks it was a Kaepernick pass,” Patton said, “but it was really Colt (McCoy) who did it.”
Regardless of the culprit, the 49ers have to be thrilled to finally see what Patton can do. The fourth round pick from Louisiana Tech will now be part of the 11-man wide receiver battle that is a little more interesting now that Jonathan Baldwin has been added to the mix. Patton has impressed early on with his dedication and eagerness to compete and will almost certainly have a spot on the 53 man roster when the season starts. Regardless of what his role will be, Patton is ready to step on the field and show what he can do.
“I just compete every day, in and out,” said Patton. “Just try to put my best foot forward and leave up it to the coaches who plays.”
-In other news on the rookie front, free safety Eric Reid is set to make his first start against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. Reid has seen some action with the first unit over the last two preseason games, but Craig Dahl had gotten the starting nod. It was only a matter of time before Reid ascended to the top of the depth chart as he has played very well so far.
“He’s close,” said defensive coordinator Vic Fangio about Reid taking over the starting job. “He’s done well all camp. We’ll probably start him in this game coming up and see how he does with that.”
