The new era of San Francisco football starts with a huge win over the high powered Saints. The 49ers even proved that they could put points up on the board with the best offense in the league.
The 49ers defense bent but never broke, and played very physical with the Saints. Vernon Davis came alive in the game, and became very emotional after making the game winning catch with :10 seconds left in the game. Drew Brees had yet another big game throwing for 461 yards and 4 touchdowns. The biggest stat of the game though was the 5 turnovers the 49ers forced, compared to only giving up 1 turnover of their own.
Going into the game if you had thought the 49ers would have put up 36 points in the game, people would have thought you were crazy. Going into the game as well, if you had thought the Saints would score 32 points and lose people would have also said you were crazy. Alex Smith played a very good game with 299 yards passing and 3 touchdowns, including the game winner to Vernon Davis.
Not to be outdone, Drew Brees threw for 461 yards and 4 touchdowns, but also had 2 interceptions. Frank Gore rushed for 89 yards on 13 carries, and Alex Smith had the run of the game with a 28 yard QB draw that scored a touchdown late in the game. Darren Sproles set an NFL post season record with 15 receptions, which led to 116 yards. The Saints though could not keep a hold of the ball in the first half, turning the ball over 5 times, 3 on fumbles and 2 interceptions.
Defensively both teams played very tough against the run, and for the most part against the pass until the fourth quarter. The 49ers were all over the field contesting the pass and making big hard hits in the first half. In the second half the passing game for the Saints really started to click, while the Saints defense was really able to keep the 49ers passing game in check, while also playing tough against the run. Dashon Goldson led the 49ers in tackles with 11, and Malcolm Jenkins led the Saints with 8. The Saints had 4 sacks, while the 49ers had 3.
While the game didn’t go as most people had thought, the 49ers were able to score the points needed to win the game. Hats off to the Saints, as they played their hearts out and pushed the 49ers to the limit. The 49ers now advance to their first NFC Championship game since 1997, when they lost to the Green Bay Packers, who they very well could happen yet again.
While the 49ers will enjoy this great win, they will also be glued to their televisions tomorrow as the Packers play the Giants to now determine where the championship game will be held. For now though 49ers fans enjoy the great and exciting victory, and be excited for the direction of the team and what can possibly be a Super Bowl run.
