Alex Smith Finally Named the 49ers Starting QB

Coach Jim Harbaugh finally named Alex Smith the 49ers’ starting quarterback after Thursday’s preseason finale. Smith finished the preseason at 20-of-36 for 198 yards (5.5 YPA), zero touchdowns, and two interceptions, but he did lead two touchdown drives on his two series Thursday night.

He didn’t exactly “earn” the job, but rookie Colin Kaepernick clearly isn’t ready to lead an NFL offense. History tells us Smith will go in the tank sooner or later. A leaky offensive line won’t help.
