QB Smith to Get a Deal Inked Once the Lockout Ends

The Sac Bee says that the Niners are almost a for sure to ink free agent QB Alex Smith to a contract once the lockout ends sometime this next week.

49ers unrestricted free-agent QB Alex Smith will likely be among the first free agents to be re-signed when the NFL lockout comes to an end. While not under contract, Smith acted as the team’s starting quarterback and team leader during the offseason. He worked with other players and tried to install new head coach Jim Harbaugh’s offensive system. Smith and Harbaugh are expected to meet shortly after the lockout comes to an end to discuss the offseason player-led practices. “I’m sure that will take place. I’m sure we’ll talk about how things went and how I felt about things – what I installed,” Smith said.
