49ers Amp Up Their Pass Rushing Efforts With Smith At 7

Drawing Comparisons To DeMarcus Ware

Here’s the scoop on Aldon Smith:

Positives: Very solid pass rusher… Explosive… Great first step… Good snap instincts… Good bend on the corner… Quick… Good agility… Good length and long arms… Will affect passing lanes when he cannot reach the quarterback… Penetrates… Good arsenal of moves… Very solid swim move… Solid drops in coverage… Closes quickly… Can be used on defensive line stunts… Plays well in space… Solid against the run… Makes plays in the backfield… Good change of direction agility… Good tackler… Good mobility… Gets to the ball carrier… Stays active… Hard worker… Good motor… Relentless… Has the frame to add 10-12 lbs… 11.5 sacks, 19 TFL and 64 tackles in 2009 (as redshirt freshman), named Big 12 Freshman of the Year and was a Freshman All-American… Has a lot of potential, has only been playing football since he was a junior in high school… Selected All-Big 12 second team for the 2009 season.

Negatives: Lacks strength and bulk… Does not appear to have much man-muscle yet… Pass rush tendencies will become predictable… Needs to work on hand technique… Can be washed out sometimes against the run… A bit of a tweener, would project as an rush linebacker for a 3-4 team… Fractured fibula sidelined him for three games this season.

Russ’ Take: It was evident the 49ers needed improve on getting to the QB.  Smith is a perfect fit for their 3-4 defense.  I fully expect Aldon to have double-digits sacks in his rookie campaign.  Possibly a defensive rookie of the year candidate.  Top-5 in the “remake” draft.
