Owner/President: 49ers will be NFC West champions

Rumors say Singletary is staying put

Can the Niners rebound with Alex Smith at QB and Mike Singletary as head coach?

I guess Jed York has been busy watching his ‘09 Tennessee Titans game film. If so, Alex Smith should be benched for either David Carr or Troy Smith, considering that’s the road the Titans traveled en route to their remarkable turnaround. Jeff Fisher’s folks finished the season 6-2 with back-up QB Vince Young, after starting 0-6. Are the Niners capable of such an impressive circling of the wagons?

“We’re going to win the division,” York predicted Monday morning in a text to ESPN. The schedule makes a case for the 49ers, but still, come on.

Somewhere Pete Carroll, Steve Spangnuolo, and Ken Whisenhunt are laughing hysterically. Can you blame them?

If the 49ers make their owner/president look a genius, they will be the first team ever under the NFL’s current playoff system birthed in 1990, to open the season 0-5 and win their division.

49ers remaining schedule:

Home: Oakland, St. Louis, Tampa Bay, Seattle, and Arizona.

Away: Carolina, Denver (London), Arizona, Green Bay, San Diego, and St. Louis.

I believe they can possibly finish 6-3, and win the NFC West at 8-8. .500 is going to win the NFL’s weakest division.
