The San Francisco 49ers have promoted Trent Baalke to Vice President of Player Personnel. What this means is that Baalke, in addition to managing the college scouting and pro personnel departments-a role he held the last 2 years as Director of Player Personnel -will now have to manage all aspects of player personnel, drafts, signings, trades, and free agency.
Baalke is now entering his 13th season in the NFL, but joined the 49ers in 2005. Over the last 5 years, he has proved his worth and moved up his way up the ladder. To my knowledge, this move does not necessarily make Baalke the General Manager, but it should indicate that Baalke has the inside track of earning that title. Former GM Scott McCloughan first served as VP of Player Personnel for 3 seasons before being named General Manager in 2008.
Tom Gamble is now the Director of Player Personnel.
