Sporting News reports that Mike Singletary seems OK for now that both his corners are not working out with the team:
Neither of the 49ers’ starting cornerbacks is participating in voluntary offseason workouts. Nate Clements, who is due $6 million this season, has been rehabbing a shoulder injury in Arizona. Shawntae Spencer has been working out in Pittsburgh, and there is speculation that he is sitting out team workouts because he wants a new contract.
Spencer emerged as the team’s top corner last season and is scheduled to make $2.85 million this season.
“I told Nate and Shawntae, ‘Hey, guys, you’re men. You do what you have to do. You know what we’re trying to get done here and I trust that,’ ” coach Mike Singletary told the San Francisco Chronicle. “They know when we bring it and get ready to go, they have to be ready to go. I don’t worry about that at all.”
The 49ers have promoted Trent Baalke to vice president of player personnel, giving him oversight of free agency, trades and re-signings. He also will continue to manage the college scouting and pro personnel departments, roles he held in his previous position as director of player personnel. Team owner Jed York said Thursday the 49ers would not have a new GM in the team’s organizational structure.
