(The 49ers did not hold a first-round pick in the 1996 NFL Draft)
With the 26th pick of the 1997 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers selected Jim Druckenmiller, quarterback out of Virginia Tech University. Druckenmiller was a complete bust however. A wasted pick through and through. In 3 NFL seasons, he managed to appear in only six games, throwing for 239 yards, a touchdown pass and 4 interceptions. Sure, the 49ers had Steve Young on their roster at the time they drafted Druckenmiller, but that is no excuse to fail so miserably. If anything, Druckenmiller should have been able to find any way to be a backup for any team. Luckily, Jeff Garcia was there to provide the 49ers with some stability at the quarterback position.
