(The 49ers did not have any first round picks in the 1976 and 1977 NFL Drafts)
With the 7th pick in the 1978 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers selected Ken MacAfee, a tight end out of Notre Dame. MacAfee was a 3-time All-America while in college, but unfortunately those accolades would not follow him to the pros. MacAfee played 2 seasons in the NFL catching 46 passes for 471 yards and 5 touchdowns. The 1979 season, his most productive, was under coach Bill Walsh. Following that season, the team wanted him to switch over to the guard position. Not happy with the idea, he decided to leave the 49ers and enter dental school. Today, MacAfee practices dentistry in Massachusetts.
