Niners Wouldn’t Change Their Name to Santa Clara

ESPN blogger Mike Sando has the latest about the Niners possible move to Santa Clara:

I remember as a kid being confused when the Los Angeles Rams relocated their games to Anaheim. They were still the L.A. Rams, everyone said, but they would play their games in Anaheim.

The San Francisco 49ers are already headquartered 40 miles down Highway 101 in Santa Clara, so it’s not such a stretch for them to play home games there in a new stadium.

The move would be quite a bit more convenient for the team. The proposed Santa Clara stadium site is within a few minutes’ drive of the team’s current facility.

The team would still call itself the San Francisco 49ers. The changes would affect two preseason games, eight regular-season games and no more than two postseason games in any given year. So, for at least 353 days in a typical 365-day year, nothing would change for the 49ers or their fans.

For some, having the team play its games in San Francisco is about more than commute times on game days. It’s about tradition. I’m sure even some fans living in Santa Clara or San Jose would rather have the team continue playing in San Francisco. I went to Giants and 49ers games on occasion growing. Walking into The Stick with its faded orange seats and outdated support posts brings back memories even though I wasn’t a fan of those teams. And I do value the great NFL moments that have happened there.

I also think having a competitive team playing in a top-notch new stadium would ease the transition for 49ers fans.

What is important to you, 49ers fans?

They SF niners now should be the Santa clara niners. They left SF. They should leave the SF out of thier name. I live in SF. I will never go to Santa clara for a game. Most people in SF will not go that far for a city that stole our football team. I’m so over the politics of EDDY & Joe buying up all the realestate surrounding the park, just to make fat cats richer. Now I’m understanding the occupy 99%. screw the people & make the rich wealthier. I now just hate the Santa Clara Niners.( traitors)

Fool, 49ers organization tried for year’s to work a new statium deal within SF. The city itself were being impossible to work a deal. They need a new statium without a doubt! The Organization did what they had to do. SO you can shut your mouth and stop being a hater.

Screw the Niners, they wanted a handout from the taxpayers and that is the only reason SF didn’t work out. Last time I checked, running an NFL team was a very profitable venture, not a charity case in need of subsidies. Giants built their own new ballpark with NO taxpayer money. Greedy 49ers owners could have done the same and the city would have welcomed it with open arms. But they had to blackmail the city with the threat of moving to Santa Clara to get that government subsidy. So we called their bluff and they weren’t bluffing. So be it.

F**k the Santa Clara 49ers. On the SC stadium site they have the number listed for buying tickets in the new stadium. 415-NINERS. What bull. Should be 408-NINERS because they are not an SF team anymore, period.

Santa Clara isn’t just next door like Daly City, or Arlington vs Dallas, it’s an entirely different metro area–San Jose. The SF name is a lie. I would consider supporting them again if they changed their name to SAN JOSE 49ERS or CALIFORNIA 49ERS (like the Not-LA Angels used to be).

It wouldn’t be any less of a lie to call them the LA 49ers. What a lying disgrace.

The 49ers are now losers and they fire the best coach they have had in over ten years I predict that they are now cursed with the CURSE OF LEVI STADIUM and I hope that the fickle Santa Clara fans fail to pay for tickets to a losing team and that the Levi Stadium goes broke.

Wow…it is bad news for the team having toleave SF. But, it will allow for the needed changes and that translates to more room and a city that actually wants them. Its a business so get over it. As any SF fan can tell you its not the first business to leave the city and it won,t be the last. So, I say change the name to the Santa Clara 49ers, and let it be done. No more whining about starting over.

York will pay the price for any failure.

        Move on…now

Heres the truth of it all. Reguardless of who or what team it is,if you move change your city name. Its always been that way for all other teams. Niners are not special or better or different.
I say it should be mandatory to change name. I mean get real, they’ll still be forty niners, just Santa Clara forty niners. Just like Raiders were still Raiders at Los Angeles, the Cardinals at St Louis, the chargers where once Los angeles, Miami Seahawks are now Baltimore Colts, The Philidelphia Eagles once were the Frankford YellowJackets, L.A. Rams now St. Louis Rams, the Houston Oilers (remember them?) now the Tennessee Titans and even the infamous Bears were once not the Chicago Bears.
So get over yourselves niner fans, quit crying..or does your name mean everything and your team nothing! That must be it, its not the players or team or skill, its the name.
Ive been a Raider fan thick and thin, through moves and name changes, good years and many bad, ups and downs. Your iether a real fan or just a good times and band wagon fan. Take your pick, theres only two!

As when the Raiders moved to LA years ago and we changed our loyalty from Raiders season ticket holders to the 49ers, abandoning the traditions the stick holds for their fans and San Francisco, I will now have to switch my loyalty yet again and become a Seahawks fan. Bye SF and sorry your greed caused you to leave your fan base.

From the day i was born, i was raised a 49ers fan, i loved Candlestick Park (AKA “The Stick”), now that they are moving to Santa Clara im really disappointed that they are leaving the very city they are named after, also that the mining group the 49ers were from SF so the name wouldn’t make sense if it was the “Santa Clara 49ers” becuz the 49ers have nothing to do with Santa Clara, moving cities affects the history of SF like The Catch by Dwight Clark and the 2009 Playoff Game Against New Orleans and just the very players and fans that gathered at The Stick every Sunday. It also affects the very local tradition in San Francisco and the Bay Area itself, overall its heartbreaking to see my team leave. I am FOREVER FAITHFUL ! WIN LOSE OR TIE NINERS TILL I DIE.

OK, its been pointed out already but if a team moves locations, they have always changed their name. Both Chargers and Raiders have been in L.A. and moved on, both took on the L.A. in their names!
Should it matter the city you hail from or is having the SF so important your team ain’t shit without that there?
If your a real true diehard fan, petition them to change to Santa Clara 49ers and show your loyalty lies with the team no matter where they go or what happens to them.
I recall how every 49er fan I knew dogged the Raiders for going to L.A. and started calling them “traiter’s”, now that the shoe is on your foot you are crying and bitchin about the name change. Get real people. This move was all about money and a new stadium.. not about the fans and their desires. I SAY CHANGE THE NAME… MAKE IT MANDATORY OR BOOT THEM FROM THE NFL. Make them just like every other team that has made a move, NO favors, no special treatment.
Just think of it this way, all the 49er fans could get the gay bay stigma off their backsides if they do make the change.
