Could Alex Smith Compete for the QB Spot in 2009?

The Sacramento Bee 49ers’ beat writer, Matt Barrows, speculates the San Francisco will try to retain QB Alex Smith by signing him to an incentive-laden contract this offseason. If that happens, he will compete with Shaun Hill during training camp for the starting job. Last season, Hill started San Francisco’s final eight games and threw for 1,873 yards, 12 TDs and eight INTs in those contests while San Francisco went 5-3.
