One has to feel bad for newly hired San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary as he basically had to inherit the team that fired coach Mike Nolan left behind. That’s not to say that Singletary didn’t know what he was getting into, because he obviosuly did. Be that as it may, the 49ers made the coaching debut of Singletary an unpleasant one as turnovers and a porous pass defense helped the Seattle Seahawks embarrass the 49ers Sunday at Monster Park 34-13.
A harbinger of things to come was when 49ers quarterback J.T. O’Sullivan was benched after committing three turnovers in favor of little-used Shaun Hill; Hill was at least able to lead San Francisco on a drive for a touchdown in the second half. Besides San Francisco’s mishaps, a steady effort by QB Seneca Wallace helped seal the deal for the Seahawks early. Wallace went 15-of-25 for 222 yards with 2 TD passes while the 49ers’ O’Sullivan went 13-of-21 for 131 yards and an interception and Hill went 15-of-23 for 173 yards and a score. Seattle’s rushing attack – or lack thereof – was led by Maurice Morris with 16 yards on 11 carries. The 49ers were led by the rushing of Frank Gore with 94 yards on 18 carries, along with 7 receptions for 65 yards.
The Seahawks receiving was led by fullback Leonard Weaver with 4 receptions for 116 yards and 2 TD’s; the 49ers were led by the aforementioned Gore while Delanie Walker chipped in with a pair of catches for 53 yards; Jason Hill caught 3 passes for 38 yards and a score. Seattle (2-5) will now return home to host the Philadelphia Eagles on November 2 while San Francisco (2-6) goes into their bye week.
