Wednesday Niners News and Notes

Alex Smith still believes he’s in the running for the starting quarterback job, and why shouldn’t he? Mike Nolan hasn’t exactly handled this matter with much detail, so if he’s going to keep being as obtuse as possible, each quarterback better believe he can be the starter. Of course, if J.T. O’Sullivan starts tomorrow against the Bears, how could anyone come up with any reason why he wouldn’t also start Week 1?…

Gary Peterson paints a bleak picture of the Niners’ current quarterback mess…

Ailene Voisin writes that O’Sullivan has qualities Smith lacks…

In more 49ers quarterback news, Nancy Gay writes that Smith isn’t ready to accept the quarterback role. I think this controversy of whether or not Smith should start is indicative of the dog-eat-dog world that is the NFL. Mike Nolan is fighting for his job, make no mistake about that. Just as Eric Mangini in New York (well, New Jersey really) welcomed Brett Favre with open arms as Mangini struggles to hold onto his head coaching job with the Jets, Nolan probably feels like he has to do whatever he can to keep his role with the 49ers, Smith’s development be damned.

This seemed like an ideal situation for Smith to gain valuable experience, being tutored by quarterback aficionado in Mike Martz. I just hope Smith gets the chance he deserves, being the face of the organizations’ future and all.
