It seems more and more like 49’ers head coach Mike Nolan and new offensive coordinator Mike Martz are falling out of love with QB Shaun Hill. The QB race in San Fran has been well documented for some time as one that would come down to former first overall pick Alex Smith and Hill, who signed a new deal in the offseason. But now, J.T. O’Sullivan seems to be more in the mix, and it looks as if the race could come down to him and Smith with Hill on the outside looking in.
Today at practice O’Sullivan ran with the first team, and during team sessions he went 10-for-18 with two picks. Smith was also turnover prone, throwing three picks while going 8-of-14. As for Hill, he hasn’t taken a practice snap since the 6th of August. Nolan told the media that it’s nothing that O’Sullivan is working with the first team most of the time, Smith the second and Hill on the sidelines, but if you read between the lines, you can’t help but wonder what is going on.
It appears right now that O’Sullivan’s past in Detroit with Martz may be enough to push him to the head of the pack. He knows the offense, knows Martz, and with Nolan needing a good year to keep his job, he can’t take a chance on a QB like Hill who has yet to fully grasp the offense and likely will need a lot more study time and practice time to do so.
