Sunday Niners Tidbits

That was a nice waste of a fourth-round pick by the 49ers with their release of Darrell Jackson. Last year, the Niners traded their fourth-rounder in the draft to obtain Jackson. Of course, they didn’t make the trade with the anticipation of releasing him a year later, but between that and this year’s first-rounder that was traded last year to move up to select Joe Staley, the Niners have been liberal with picks that could have been used to build depth on this team…

Niner Insider Kevin Lynch was surprised that Jackson was released…

Pro Football Weekly is reporting it its “Whispers” column that Dontarrious Thomas has the edge over Brandon Moore for the strong-side ILB position…

The 14-week voluntary strength and conditioning program begins at 49ers headquarters on Monday. Within this piece, it is noted that Justin Smith wanted to work out immediately following his signing with the team. That’s my kinda guy!…

Mock Draft projections

This area finally deserves its own section. PFW is predicting Michigan State wide receiver Devin Thomas, NFLDraftBlitz.com is sticking with Oklahoma receiver Malcolm Kelly, while ESPN’s Todd McShay chooses Boston College tackle Gosder Cherilus. McShay picks a tackle because Cherilus would fill the right tackle spot left open by Staley switching to left tackle and the Niners should be able to find a competent receiver in the second round. ESPN cohort Mel Kiper Jr. seconds Cherilus in the first round, but thinks the Niners could take a long look at UCLA outside linebacker Bruce Davis in the second round.
