Bryant Johnson and Niners Agree to Terms

Johnson
The 49ers and ex-Arizona Cardinal wide receiver Bryant Johnson have agreed to a one-year contract, as reported by Pro Football Weekly and ESPN Radio.

Johnson has caught at least 40 passes for the Cardinals the past four years and has 210 career catches and nine touchdowns in his five NFL seasons.

I put in an email to Aaron Salkin, the 49ers Director of Public Relations, about any comment the team has on Johnson’s signing.

Johnson is a talented receiver who never received a great opportunity playing behind Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin in Arizona.

What I find amusing is that 49ers GM Scot McCloughan was quoted last week as saying the 49ers were finished with free agent moves before the summer. GMs always give you a reason to think twice about any proclamations they make…

Pro Football Weekly is reporting that their 49ers source believes Isaac Bruce’s leadership and knowledge of Mike Martz’ offensive philosophy will be valuable in his role as the team’s number one receiver.

Team sources contend that second-year receiver Jason Hill comes closest on the roster to filling out as a potential number one receiver and that spending a year with Bruce will help his development. The same was said for tight end Vernon Davis…

Will the 49ers sign Kevin Jones now that he was released by Detroit? Given their penchant now for acquiring injury-riddled running backs, he seems a natural fit. But would Jones want to reunite with Martz?…

I asked Salkin about any comment he could make on the 49ers’ interest in Takeo Spikes and in an email response, he said, “We only announce when a player signs a contract.” So expect an announcement Monday…

There has been some great debate on 49ersgab.com this week regarding whether Isaac Bruce should wear #80, the hallowed 49ers number once worn by Jerry Rice.

Well, the San Jose Mercury News is reporting on Friday that Bruce WILL NOT wear #80. Salkin told the Mercury News that the 49ers leaving the number “in honor of Jerry Rice’s legacy.”
Thank goodness. Now I can halt that F-22 missile attack I was planning on 49ers headquarters…

Why is #80 available for the 49ers in the first place? Why in the hell haven’t the 49ers retired Rice’s number? Are they penalizing him for falling three touchdowns short of 200 for his regular season career? Are his 13 Pro Bowl selections, 12 All Pro selections, two Offensive Player of the Awards and Super Bowl MVP trophy not enough for the 49ers? I will get to the bottom of this if I have to pester Mr. Salkin every day for the next year. No, seriously…

UPDATE: Salkin just emailed me back with this response regarding wide receiver Bryant Johnson: “He has not signed a contract with us. We only respond to players that have signed contracts with us.” Ahh, that is because Johnson and the 49ers have “agreed to terms,” but nothing is official. Very savvy and my mistake for confusing “agreed to terms” with “signed a contract.
