49′ers terminate Dilfer’s contract

In what may be an end to his career, Trent Dilfer had his contract terminated by the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday. Dilfer also would have received a $500,000 roster bonus if he was still on the team on March 15.

The move is hardly a surprise considering the 49ers already employ Alex Smith, Shaun Hill and newly signed-J.T. O’Sullivan as their quarterbacks.

Dilfer never developed into the quarterback that many expected him to when he was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers out of Fresno State in 1994.

However, Dilfer can call himself a Super Bowl quarterback, as he helped lead the Baltimore Ravens to a Super Bowl win in the 2000-01 season.

Dilfer was the quintessential quarterback teacher in his last few seasons in the league and was known as one of the most personable players around.
