Everytime you turn around it looks as if Mike Nolan and Alex Smith are being linked to having problems. Tuesday the team took quick action in putting out the latest fire that says that Nolan and Smith are having issues, stating that if they both are back next season they will be able to work together. A story in Monday’s San Jose Mercury News had Smith making some critical comments about his coach, saying that Nolan was trying to “undermine” him in the locker room and that he was using his separated shoulder as an excuse for poor play.
Smith said in a statement on Tuesday that the story did not reflect how he felt. “I can see how an article like this can be very damaging, but I know my relationships with coach Nolan and my teammates are stronger than that,” Smith said in Tuesday’s statement. “I met with coach Nolan (on Tuesday), and I never intended this to be a distraction for the team or their preparation for the upcoming game. My focus now is to concentrate on getting healthy so I can return and continue to help my team.”
Where there is smoke there’s fire, and too many times this season the two have been linked to having major problems, in and out of the public eye. Sure, things may be okay for now, but you have to wonder when push comes to shove for the 2008 season if one of them won’t be around any longer with the issues they are currently having.
